On Thursday, March 12 a group of youth from around Portland presented after months of hard work to a live audience at McMenamins Lola’s Room.
Led by Catlin Gabel senior Nico Hamacher ’15 and teacher Renee Jenkinson, the organization Cocoon Youth Storytelling, presented PDX Cocoon – Episode 1: Risk to a crowd of around 150 people. The event was produced with the assistance of around 12 student producers and nine storytellers.

Prior to the event, the group led multiple workshops for Portland youth.
The even was sponsored by KBOO Community Radio, Ruby Jewel Scoops, and ¿Por qué no? Taqueria.
Hamacher and storyteller Marian Fragoso also starred on a segment on KGW News Channel 8 discussing the event.
“It was a really valuable experience,” storyteller Jubilee Lopez explained. “It’s important for young people to eloquently tell their own stories.”
The Cocoon Youth Organization plans to organize a variety of workshops and shows in the future. Any youth interested in participating can sign-up and find more information through the group’s website.
