This past Thursday was the NBA’s annual trade deadline, which is the last day players can be traded among teams until the end of the season. The Portland Trail Blazers were
one of the many teams that were active on the trade market.
The Blazers acquired Arron Afflalo and Alonzo Gee of the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Thomas Robinson, Will Barton, Victor Claver, a 2016 first round draft pick, as well as a second round draft pick.
Throughout the past few years, Portland has had a very strong starting lineup but lacked a scoring and strong defensive presence off the bench. The team hopes Afflalo will fill this void.
Afflalo has averaged 14.5 points, 1.9 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game this year. His role as a member of his new team will be to provide a spark both offensively and defensively. He will accompany the usual second unit of Steve Blake, Chris Kaman, and either C.J. McCollum or Meyers Leonard.
Gee has averaged 4.9 points, 0.5 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per game this season. Expectations for Gee will be significantly lower than those for Afflalo. However, in previous seasons he has contributed incredible talent to his former teams, and is also a player known to be good for a few highlight reel dunks.
The pickup of Afflalo and Gee will help bolster the roster in the remainder of the regular season, and, hopefully a deep playoff run.
