The UN has taken back an invitation to Iran to attend the Syrian peace conference, set to begin on Wednesday, after strong pressure from the United States and other countries.

As Iran is one of Syria’s regimes allies, the US and the Western-backed Syrian opposition for the event frowned upon the idea of Iran participating. Iran is the main military and financial supporter of the Syrian regime.

The conference, which begins in Switzerland, will be the largest diplomatic effort to end the civil war in Syria. The conflict has lasted nearly three years and has claimed more than 100,000 lives.
