This past weekend in Oregon Episcopal School’s sparsely filled gym, the Catlin Gabel boys basketball program kicked off the 2014 season.
The team consists of sophomores, juniors, and seniors who played two games against two established Oregon club teams in a Fall League run by Hoopsource, a local organization.
The Fall League spans seven weeks, with two games every Saturday.
First, Catlin played Oregon Swish, a high ranking club team. Unfortunately, with only seven of the nine team members available, Catlin wasn’t able to keep up with the offensive Swish team and ultimately lost.
Jacob ‘17 encapsulated the consensus view of the first game commenting, “…in our first game we were a bit rusty because most of us hadn’t played ball in a little while…”
The team, led by vocal leader Vishal ‘16, refused to let the boys bow their heads, and instead told them to “just play ball.”
This nonchalant approach helped carry the team into the next game, against Oregon Elite. Catlin led for a majority of the game, willed by a strong defensive performance from the group and resulting in a double-digit win.
Jacob, the team’s three point sniper, once again captured the mood of the game with his remark: “We bounced back and beat a pretty good team…and it [Fall League] will be a great stepping stone into the winter season.”
The team looks to improve their 1-1 record in their next games this upcoming weekend.
