We believe that Charlie Hales is the most viable candidate for mayor of Portland because of his past experience, policies, and personal decisions. Hales has shown he would make a positive impact on the Portland community.
Like any political candidate, Hales has been scrutinized by the press, and each of his missteps has been well publicized. At the debate hosted by CatlinSpeak, he explained his decision to move to Washington and also apologized for the instances of misinformation originating from his campaign. Hales promised to take responsibility for his mistakes and said “…if I make a mistake I’ll stand up and own it.”
Hales’ work on the Portland light rail and Portland parks shows that he can accomplish what he sets out to do. Hales also initiated change in the Fire Bureau by increasing the number of minority employees. At HDR Engineering has shown he can take on big projects to create change.
His past experiences as an urban planner and engineer are reflected in his plans for Portland. He intends to build stronger relationships between police officers and pedestrians as well as raise the water quality in the Willamette River. Hales also plans to assist programs that help students applying to colleges, create a fund to make Portland parks more accessible, and increase the number of programs dedicated to eliminating employment barriers faced by low-income families and people of color.
Charlie Hales has continuously proven his commitment to the city and the people of Portland. If elected, his passion for helping his community will help him make Portland better. Consider voting for Hales, a man who owns up to his mistakes, has well thought-out policy ideas, a solid background in politics, and a honorable work ethic.
